Even though there are many effective over-the-counter and prescription medications for treating acne, curing acne does take a bit of time and so, while the medication does its work, most people are anxious to conceal their acne as much as they can.
That said, it can be argued that since this is a common condition affecting roughly eighty-five percent of the population between the ages of about 12 and 24 you really shouldn’t worry about trying to cover it up at all because almost all of us go through it. Nevertheless, you try telling that to a young person who is going out on that crucial first date.
Women tend to suffer more because, like it or not, they tend to be judged more on their looks. But, they are also luckily enough to have a ready-made answer in the shape of makeup.
Regular makeup however can cause difficulties and, while it may well cover up your acne, it could also aggravate the underlying condition. The answer here therefore is to look for makeup which is specifically formulated for people with acne and that means makeup which is labeled as ‘non-comedogenic’. If that sounds like a strange term it is derived from the word ‘comedone’ which is the medical name for the blackheads and whiteheads accompanying many mild forms of acne.
You should start by looking for a concealer that can be dabbed onto pimples using a disposable sponge. You must be careful though in using a concealer and use just as much as you need and no more.
Next it is on to a foundation which is excellent for blending your skin tones and again this must be used sparingly but in sufficient quantity to give you an even overall cover. You will find that foundation is not only excellent at covering your pimples but, because it is not as reflective as your skin itself, it also softens out the shadows and reduced the contrast that is frequently produced by the bumps that accompany acne.
Lastly, a light covering of powder will also help to further blend color tones, reduce shadow and eliminate contrast.
So much for the women, but what about the men? Well, there are two approaches here. First, you can follow the women and apply makeup and you will discover that there is makeup available nowadays which is specially formulated for use by men. However, if you don not think that this is for you then a second approach is to use one of the range of over-the-counter treatments which contain acne covering compounds to help cure the condition and at the same time to hide its appearance.
It would be great if we had a proactive acne solution which could get rid of acne fast but at present clearing acne is a somewhat lengthy process and so, until we have some treatments and products that cure acne fast, effectively concealing the condition is going to be important to many sufferes for a while yet.
