7 Acne Treatments To Avoid

Since acne is, by far, the most common disease in the world, I’m constantly amazed at the amount of misinformation there is about acne treatments. There are so many commonly held beliefs about treatments which have no scientific or medical validity. But they continue to be passed on as fact. More worrying is the possible results of trying some of these options.

Here is a list of common acne treatments that should be avoided:

1. Household cleaning products, even at a diluted level, should never be used as a treatment for acne. There can be severe adverse reactions, including chemical burns, from using these products.

2. Home facial saunas will not help your acne. They can, however, be aggravating to already sensitive skin.

3. Sticky tape put on the skin overnight and removed in the morning may help remove some dead skin cells and excess oil, but also will probably damage the sensitive skin, and may cause an allergic reaction in the area.

4. While the rays from the sun are beneficial, prolonged exposure to the sun (or using a tanning bed) is not advised. As a matter of fact, this practice can be dangerous if you are also taking certain types of oral medications. As an example, taking certain antibiotics in tablet form, will make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

5. Sudocrem is an excellent treatment for nappy rash, but is not effective for acne. This is primarily because it contains a mixture of greases and oils, which are not good for acne.

6. Like the sun, vitamins A and B (in lower amounts) are beneficial for your body and skin. However, in larger dosages, they can have side-effects.

7. Squeezing your acne is universally not recommended in combating acne. Doing so can prolong and cause the acne to spread to other previously unaffected areas.

There are many other “not recommended” treatments for acne, many of which will worsen an already difficult condition. Avoid these shortcuts and stick with a program recommended by your skin care expert, or one which is based on solid scientific and medical advice. If you do this, you’ll succeed in overcoming your acne condition.
